Terms of Service
Last updated Oct 5, 2026
These terms are the agreement between you and Oathstar LLC, a Colorado limited liability company ("Oathstar", "we", "us"). They cover oathstar.com and everything we offer there. If you create an account or use the site, you agree to them. If you don't agree, please don't use the site.
Our mailing address is 1500 N Grant St, Ste N, Denver, CO 80203. For questions about these terms, write to support@oathstar.com.
What Oathstar is
Oathstar is an independent record of what members of Congress and candidates do in public life: how they vote, what they say, who funds their campaigns and whether their bills pass. The profiles are built from government records and public media. Reading the public profiles is free and doesn't need an account. Some features need a free account, and some need a paid plan.
Your account
- Give us a real email address and keep your password to yourself. You are responsible for what happens under your account.
- An account is for one person. Please don't share logins.
- Tell us right away if you think someone else got into your account.
- We may suspend or close an account that breaks these terms.
Acceptable use
You may use Oathstar to research, report on, teach about and keep track of public officials and candidates in their public roles. You may not:
- harass, threaten, stalk or dox anyone, or use Oathstar to find or publish a private person's home address, personal phone number or other private details;
- resell Oathstar's data, or republish it as your own product or service;
- copy the site in bulk with automated tools, other than through the exports your plan includes;
- try to break, overload or get around the security or limits of the site; or
- use Oathstar to break the law.
Linking to Oathstar's free pages, and quoting them with credit, is welcome.
Campaign finance data and federal law
Oathstar shows campaign money from filings with the Federal Election Commission, mostly as totals and as money moving between committees. We do not publish the names, addresses or employers of individual contributors.
Federal law (52 U.S.C. 30111(a)(4)) says that information about individual contributors copied from FEC reports may not be sold or used to solicit contributions or for any commercial purpose. That covers asking for charitable donations as well as political ones. The law does allow using a political committee's own name and address to ask that committee for a contribution.
You agree not to use any information about individual contributors that you get through Oathstar to solicit contributions or for any commercial purpose.
Free and paid plans
Public profiles and headline measures are free. Pro and any other paid plan are described on the pricing page, and the price and billing period are shown at checkout before you pay.
Journalists, students and academics can ask for Press & Education access, which gives Pro features free for one year, renewable, for non-commercial work only. We may check requests and end this access at any time if it is used for commercial work or the details given were not accurate.
Subscriptions and cancellation
- Payments are handled by Stripe. We never see or store your card number.
- A paid plan renews automatically at the end of each billing period (Pro is billed yearly or monthly, as you choose at checkout; Team is billed yearly) until you cancel. We charge the card you gave us at the start of each period.
- You can cancel at any time. Open your account, choose Manage billing, and cancel in the billing portal. Cancelling stops the next renewal, and you keep your paid access until the end of the period you have already paid for.
- If we change the price of a plan, we will tell you before the new price applies to you, and you can cancel before it does.
Refunds
- You won't be charged again after you cancel.
- If Oathstar isn't what you expected, email support@oathstar.com within 14 days of your first payment, or within 14 days of a yearly renewal, and we will refund that payment in full.
- Monthly renewals after your first payment are not refunded, but you can cancel at any time so you aren't charged again.
- If you were charged by mistake, for example twice or after you cancelled, email us and we will refund the charge.
- We don't refund part of a billing period after that, because you keep access until the period ends.
About the information on Oathstar
The data comes from public sources, and we work to keep it accurate, but mistakes and delays happen. If you see something wrong on a profile, use the "Report a correction" link there or email support@oathstar.com. Some plain-English summaries are read by an AI from public text and are labeled "AI-read"; they can be wrong.
Oathstar shows what the public record shows. It is not legal, financial or professional advice, and it never says that a gift caused a vote.
Our content and yours
Oathstar's design, text, scoring methods and the way we compile and present data belong to us. The public records underneath them stay public. If you send us a correction or feedback, you let us use it to improve the site.
No warranty and limits on our liability
Oathstar is provided "as is", without promises that it will be error-free or always available. To the extent the law allows, Oathstar LLC is not liable for indirect or consequential losses, and our total liability for any claim is limited to what you paid us in the 12 months before the claim.
Changes
We may change the site or these terms. When we make a material change to these terms we will update the date at the top and email account holders. Using the site after a change means you accept it.
Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Colorado.
